Day 5 of ‘Verulam in the morning’ and Jonny signed off in style with a bumper show.

Special guest was musician and song writer Tobiah who spoke to us over the phone but had also specially recorded 3 tracks in her home studio for Jonny to play. She spoke about her musical inspirations and her song writing process. She rated our Madonna, the Rolling Stones and Gary Barlow as her choices for our musical ICONS of the week. DIY Rob was also present today had to be drafted in as the travel news presenter and performed admirably He had some BIG BIG news himself, he was off to film his first DIY video for youtube that afternoon. We’ll keep you posted.

The Who am I? guessing game was won in super quick time by ex-Columbus College pupil Nick Spears who correctlyt emailed in the name Roger Moore. Yes, who would have thought that Roger Moore would have once lived in Leverstock Green.

The West Herts Question asked why London Colney School had to delay its opening. The answer…… the second world war started.

Day Four of Jonny covering for Phil was an action packed 4 hours of radio. Today we were joined by Jen from DriveTime who presented the weather, Community notice board, traffic and travel news.

Emi Green and her band (Rich and Dave – we sadly didn’t have space for the others) played a brilliant set after the 11 o’clock news comprising of a cover of ‘Eva Cassidy’s – Songbird’ and two of Emi’s own songs ‘Missing and Infinity’ To find out more about Emi her music and gigs, checkout her website http://www.emigreenmusic.com/ The three of them chatted with Jonny about their musical influences and rated our musical icons of the week, ion the whole there was a lot of agreement. Finally before Emi left Jonny tackled Rich over his instrument!!!!!!! Rich was playing a Peruvian drum called a ‘Cajon’, which he had pimped up by adding a foot cymbal. Check it out. He's never lost for a seat!

The answer to the West Herts Question was ‘A Green Flag.’ This was presented to Harpenden in 2007 for their beautiful green landscape. The Who Am I? clue was ‘I’m a fame haired actor who fights with Harry in a quest against evil.’ The answer is Hertforshire’s very own Rupert Grint.

Our regular theatre guru Adam Towndrow was also with us to talk us through the Edinburgh Festival and recommend some of the acts from West Herts that will be appearing there this year.

On Wednesday 3rd August ‘Waylayers’ joined Jonny Seabrook in the Radio Verulam studio to perform 3 of their songs. After 30 minutes of setting up, tuning up and winding Danny Smith up. ‘Waylayers’ are Harry, Joe and Dave and finally they were ready to go. They played their current single ‘Hear No Lies’; ‘Less No More’ and ‘Weightless’. They also chatted with Jonny about their musical influences and contributed to the musical ICON debate. All the boys went with the Beatles of the Stones and Gary over Robbie, but Harry was more of a Kylie man while Dave and Joe settled with Madonna. Wednesday is market day in St Albans and as the market was being set up Jonny reviewed the newspaper headlines and discussed St Albans City FC’s friendly match v Peterborough United. Unfortunately City lost 4-1, but there were encouraging signs for the new season which starts on Saturday.

David Pearson played us some clips from the consecration service of the new Abbey bells which included some wise words from the Dean the Very Reverend Jeffery John.

The Who Am I guessing game was won by John from Marshallswick and the answer was John Motson, the sheep skin coast gave it away.

The West Herts Question was asking which monarch grew up at Hatfield House. The answer is Elizabeth I.

Jonny for Phil Day 2 Tuesday 2nd August 2011

Today on the show we were honoured and privileged to have DriveTime God Danny Smith as our ‘Travel Girl’. Who was very relaxed in this new challenge.

David Pearson continued his reports on the new bells in St Albans Abbey, which contained clips from the consecration service.

There were two contests.

The first being a ‘West Herts Question;’ which was ‘How many car parking spaces are their in the Maltings carpark? The answer being 750!!!!!!!!!! Amazing that it’s always rammed on market day.

The second contest was the ‘Who Am I?’ guessing game. The clue was about a famous resident of West Herts and went like this….. ‘I rose to fame in the 70’s music scene and am now over the Moon to be in the eastend.’ Any ideas????????????????????
The answer is, of course, Oldies pop star David Essex, who is currently starring in EastEnders as the father of the Moon family.

After 11 o’clock we were joined by singer / songwriter Shia Mitchell. She performed two of her own songs ‘Lost and Rachel's Lullaby as well as a cover of Gnarls Barclays Crazy.’ Shia had a chat with Jonny about how she got into music and she also rated our musical icons.

We will post a video tomorrow of her performing live in the Radio Verulam Studios, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Bright and breezy this morning at 8am Jonny Seabrook opened the mic in studio A at Radio Verulam to start Verulam in the Morning.

David Pearson reported on the famous new bells in St Albans Abbey and there was a 'West Herts Question' all about this years 'Larks in the Parks'

We were also visited by Mr D the Numberman, the local school teacher with a passion for figures. He had recently returned from Scotland and he set us a 'Brain Teaser' question based on this.

'How many miles are there as the crow flys from St Albans Abbey to the Highlands of Scotland?' The answer after a few wrong answers was revealed as 493miles.

Mr D also chatted about the forth coming GCSE and A level exam results and discussed his views on whether the examples are getting easier.

After 11 we were joined by the acoustic duo Bobby and Mike. They sang two songs for us 'The Lazy Song' and 'Stand By Me' they then came into Studio A for a chat with Jonny. He has challenged them to write a paradogy song all about St Albans.... keep posted for that.

The RV Sundaylunch LIVE at the Herts Show

On Sunday 29th May at midday the RV Sunday lunch with Jonny Seabrook broadcast live on 92.6FM from a tent at the Herts County Show.

We challenged are roving reporters Elizabeth Herriage and Roma Bhowmick to find, borrow and beg 5 items from the Show. This is how they got on

Elizabeth had to get..... a fireman's helmet, a horseshoe, soem hog roast, some thatch and a picture of her on a tractor. She managed all 5, but had a point taken off for a late return back to Jonny.

Rhoma had to get..... some candy floss, some Hertfordshire brewed beer, a rosette, a picture of her on 'Spider Mountain' and some manure. Unfortunately for Rhoma, there was no rosette and the 'Cider' she returned was brewed in Somerset. So she only scored 3.

We played a few of our regular games such as the 'West Herts Question?' which was how many years has the county show been held at the County Ground.... answer 49. and the 'Who am I?' guessing game where the answer was the former President of the show, Vinnie Jones.

Plus we spoke to Richard from Lafage, sponsors of the show, Angela from ButterflyWorld and Kirsty from saddlechip.co.uk. After their chat with Jonny they played a little game called 'Herts ot Nots' and they all score 4/5.

Today we were joined for lunch by our theatre critic Adam Towndrow.

Here are his suggestions for May 2011 in West Herts Theatre Land.

Firstly at the Abbey Theatre between 13th-21st May 2011 Company of Ten present 'Rock 'n' Roll' By Tom Stoppard in the main theatre.
This is a remarkable and witty play from one of our foremost playwrights. Tom Stoppard chronicles the years from the Prague Spring of '68 through to 1990 from the perspectives of two young men in Prague and a Marxist philosopher in Cambridge.
A progressive rock band in Prague and the music of Pink Floyd symbolise the resistance for the young people. You'll love the music.

The Radlett Light Opera Society Presents 'Ruddigore'.

This is Gilbert and Sullivan’s humorous take on Victorian melodrama in one of their finest confections. When good, mild-mannered Robin Oakapple is revealed to be the bad baronet of Ruddigore, he finds he is bound by an old curse to commit a crime a day – or die in agony. To add insult to injury, his own foster brother steals his sweetheart, the virtuous Rose Maybud, and poor Robin believes things can’t get any worse. But then, he hasn’t yet met his portrait gallery of ancestors, who are very keen that he should live up to the family reputation. Add Sullivan’s tuneful music to Gilbert’s witty words and you have all you need for a wonderful evening’s entertainment.
It's on at the Radlett Arts Theatre from Tuesday 10th - Saturday 14th May, 7.45pm and also on Saturday 14th May, 2.30pm .

At the Harpenden Public Halls Scamp Theatre & Poonamallee present PRIVATE PEACEFULby Michael Morpurgo, which has been adapted & directed by Simon Reade.

This play relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. It's suitable for people 8+.

Finally at the OVO, in Pudding Lane St Albans on 20th / 21st May 2011 @ 8pm there's a 'Musical Jouney' presented by the the OVOcalists (get it???) and musical Director James Pitchford.

After their sellout success last Autumn, the OVOcalists are back with an electric evening of musical theatre. From Cole Porter to Rent, via Lloyd Webber, Sondheim and Bernstein, and everything else in between!

Also watch out for our mate Ed White as the MC.

Jonny talks to Sally Onn from St Albans Striders

On today's Verulam In The Morning, Jonny spoke to Sally Onn of St Albans Striders. Sally was speaking to us in the glorious sunshine down at Canary Wharf where she was volunteering at a special sports day.

St Albans Striders is a running club that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Westminster Lodge. Over 30 members recently took part in the London Marathon, one even dressed as a fairy. Sally's finishing time was 3 Hours 8 Mins - three minutes faster than the fairy!

Next month sees the St Albans 10K Run, organised by the Striders. This circular route starts and finishes outside of Waitrose on King Harry Lane and is open to all. The run is on Sunday 8th May and more information can be found on their website www.stalbansstriders.com

DIY Rob gets to work

Today I witnessed something unbelievable as DIY Rob constructed something useful from just a bits of wood, some screws and very special drill / screwdriver thingy. His creation is just in time for the planting season as spring kicks in a rasied planting bed!!!!!! And apparently you can do it too, Rob says it's easy, have look.....

He screws........ He drills.......................

The Radio Verulam Sunday Lunch review of OVO theatre's Picasso at the Lapin Agile

By Steve Martin Directed by Ed White 6th - 9th April 2011 @ 8pm Abbey Theatre Studio, St Albans *** PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE FOR THESE PERFORMANCES *** 13th - 16th April 2011 @ 8pm OVO @ Pudding Lane, St Albans Picasso at the Lapin Argile Far from making me feel blue! *** (3 stars) Having previously enjoyed ART, OVO’s last run at Pudding Lane, I was looking forward to seeingSteve Martin’s play “Picasso at the Lapin Argile”. My destination was altered due to “licensing issues”, which meant the play had to be transferred to the Abbey Theatre, the show must (and usually does) go on! The Abbey Theatre played a fantastic role in the piece, semi in the round, I felt completely apart of this 1904 meeting of Picasso and Einstein. In fact the fourth wall was truly smashed when a cast member took a programme from an unsuspecting audience member to reveal another actor came on too early. Steve Martin is known particularly for his comic timing, delivery and physical humour, OVO pull off with ease a skilled comic timing which had the audience in stitches. A slow start, but it soon got into it’s stride. With interesting characters and characterisations of wonderful historic figures, the Lapin Agile was a place for artists of all backgrounds to meet and share their thoughts of the world and future, while drinking or going for a pee. I was struggling to accept some of choices that were made on the aesthetics side to the production, set in 1904, yet Picasso’s Agent takes a photograph to document the artists within the bar using a Digital camera. And while all of the actors seem to connect physically to their characters, Picasso, played by Howard Salinger, was someone who looked and sounded like a jack the lad of the 21st century. At times the accents were a little under rehearsed , Will Franklin was incredibly solid, consistent and utterly convincing as Albert Einstein. Sagot, played by Oscar Blend, as ever, gave a wonderfully camp and charming performance. He has so much presence and timing and stood out for me as the star of the evening. I thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s performance and would recommend it to anyone looking for a classic, speedy, comic, one liner production. Review By Adam Towndrow

On today's show Mr D, the number man, was back and thankfully was a lot happier than last week.

His brain draine question was about all about St Albans FC.

'What number do you get if you take away the number of players St Albans are allowed to use in a league game by the number of teams in their division?'

WELL........... there's 22 teams in the Blue Square Conference South and all the teams including St Albans can use up to 3 subs, plus the starting 11 making 14. So we have 14 to take from 22 leaving us with 8!!!!!

Did you get it? It helps if you know your footy. Mr D will be back in October.

Next week our theatre correspondent Adam from C12 Dance and Theatre will be with us talking all about what's on in the St Albans' theatres in October. Rumour has it he is declaring an interest.

DIY Rob was also here with some painting advice. If you need to use the same paint roller the following day, wrap it in a carrier bag to keep it fresh. Also, putting salt inside filler makes it dry faster. Finally, remember the importance of preparation!

Adam Towndrow, Director of C-12 Dance Theatre, joined Jonny today to talk about the company's moving, emotionally charged double bill The Chair, performed at the Arcola Theatre in London until the 7th of August.

C-12 are running a Summer School at Chancellor's School from the 16th - 20th of August, for ages 11-12 +. The week's course will cost £80 for school pupils, £100 for students and graduates and £120 for everyone else. Email Adam (adam@c-12dancetheatre.com) or visit the website for details.
